Please read the following information carefully and make sure you understand all of it. It is extremely important that you pay attention to these issues while you are studying in Australia and holding a student visa. You must meet these requirements to keep your visa. For further information, consult the Department of Immigration & Citizenship (DIAC).
Your academic progress will be monitored by your teachers. If they consider that you are not making satisfactory progress they will advise the principal. As a guide you should pass at least 50% of the course. It is a condition of your student visa that you make satisfactory academic progress. DIMIA requires that Layas reports any students who are not making satisfactory progress and this may result in the cancellation of their student visa. You are not allowed to extend your visa to repeat any subject/module more than once.
Layas Institute requires students to maintain a level of attendance of 70% or above at all times. Attendance will be monitored on a term-by-term basis, and if a student¡¯s attendance has dropped below 70%, they will be required to attend an interview with their Course Coordinator to explain why. If they do not have a satisfactory explanation, their continued participation in the course may be reviewed.
Students with attendance issues may contact us at any time to arrange an interview to discuss these issues. The purpose of this interview is to ensure that the student is fully aware of their responsibilities regarding attendance while also providing the student with the opportunity to discuss and determine a solution to issues or circumstances that are affecting their attendance.
DIAC requires that you study full-time, part-time studies are not permitted. Full-time is considered by DIAC to be 20 hours per week over 18 weeks (total 360 hours per semester). If you have any concerns about your timetabled hours you should contact Layas immediately.
Withdrawal from subjects or modules, exemptions for recognised prior learning or credit transfers will only be approved if contact hours still meet the full-time requirement (as above).
International students are able to work up to 20 hours per week whilst studying in Australia. You must start your study at Layas before you can apply for a work permit.
The forms required to apply for a Work Permit are available from Student Services. Remember that generally for every hour of class time you should be doing at least another hour of study in your own time. Be careful not to risk your ability to achieve your qualification or retain your student visa due to working in excess of the 20 hour per week limit.
DIMIA also requires that you notify us if you change your address. If you do not keep us informed of your current contact details you will be in breach of the conditions of your student visa and your visa could be cancelled. Please advise Student Services of any changes to your personal details within seven days.
All international students are required to have Overseas Student Health Cover (OHSC), as part of their visa conditions. We can arrange the cover for students with OSHC Worldcare for the appropriate amount.
Students studying for a Diploma need to pay for two years ($703.00). The cost for a family is $740 per year. These fees are payable annually in advance.
The student will be issued with a policy number once their application has been processed by OSHC Worldcare. A membership card will be sent to students within 12 weeks.
Please note that these prices are determined by OSHC Worldcare and may be subject to change.
OSHC covers most medical expenses for treatment from a doctor (including specialists), whether it is in hospital, at home or at the doctor¡¯s surgery. It also covers a student for pathology services such as blood tests and x-rays, as well as emergency ambulance services.
OSHC will not cover illness or disability that existed before the student arrived in Australia, and that may require the student to undergo related medical treatment while studying, for the first 18 months of their stay. It also does not cover dental and optometry costs but extra OSHC can be taken out to cover these services.
Further details regarding the exact conditions of this health cover can be obtained from www.oshcworldcare.com.au.
A list of local doctors is available upon request from Student Services staff.
